CLIB dramatises “900- The Story of a King” by Pedro Seromenho as part of its Medieval Carnival party
On the 12th February past the entire CLIB community united for the celebration of a very special medieval carnival. The theme for this evening of festivity was provided by Pedro Seromenho's book “900 - The Story of a King” which re-tells the story of D. Afonso Henriques.
As part of the Portuguese and History curriculum the students of Forms 4, 5, 6 and 7 had spent the previous three months busily preparing the dramatisation of this fascinating story. Their preparation was expertly guided and directed by their respective teachers Sandra Conde and Tiago Machado. Four original songs had been specially composed by the Music teacher Manuel Viera and the lyrics penned by Sandra Conde and Tiago Machado. All scenery and back-drops were designed and put together by the students of Form 8 under the watchful eye of our Art teacher Maria Edgell and Isabel Vieira. With everything prepared and in place the scene was set for a fantastic night's entertainment. Every family was invited to this thematic carnival celebration. Most entered completely into the spirit of the night by dressing up in medieval costume and thus creating a real atmosphere of the middle ages. We were absolutely delighted that the author of the book, Pedro Seromenho had accepted our invitation to be present at our medieval recreation. Having enthusiastically witnessed the dramatization of his work “900 - The Story of a King” he complimented our students for their “fantastic and heart-felt” performance and for the way in which they had re-created so brilliantly the story of D. Afonso Henriques. The extraordinary story of a king that was re-told with such elegance and passion will live on in the memories of all our students and all others who were present on that memorable night. Congratulations! The invitation extended to all was not just to be witnesses to a wonderful drama presentation but rather to participate fully in a night of celebration. This included the now traditional buffet dinner. As is the norm in CLIB our celebration was also a way of raising funds for the project “CLIB supports Habitat for Humanity in Mozambique” which will take place once again this April. It was truly a night of Carnival in CLIB!
