Diplomats from CLIB attend the Model United Nations in Milan
During the period 01 to 05 April 2009, 5 students from CLIB participated in the Model United Nations in Milan, Italy.

The event was organised by the school Civico Liceo Linguistico Alessandro Manzoni and held at the
prestigious and internationally reputed Bocconi University.

Our young Portuguese diplomats represented the United Arab Emirates. They were well prepared and knowledgeable about their assigned country with a vision on how to defend and promote both the common and individual interests of its citizens through various committees: Political, Human rights, Disarmament, ECOSOC and the environment.

Beatriz Borges assumed the brief of International Politics, specialising in the Israel and Palestine conflict. The independence of the former Soviet Block countries was also discussed as were strategies to combat global terrorism.

Pedro Jorge tackled Human Rights, the safeguarding of ethnic minorities was a principal concern here and he urged reflection on the freedom of the press and female emancipation.

In respect of disarmament, Devin Beck, had the opportunity to highlight the UAE stance in this area and to focus attention on nuclear power and arms trafficking.

With ECOSOC, Brian Soares and the other members were able to promote strategies to combat drugs trafficking, the food crisis and the relationship between poverty and crime.

The Environmental committee, with Ana Rita Tavares, skilfully debated the question of energy resources, the use and abuse of chemicals in agricultural production and the question of the permanent threat posed to biodiversity.

The young diplomats were also given the opportunity to get to know the city of Milan in its more diverse dimensions of culture, gastronomy, architecture...they enjoyed the cosmopolitan atmosphere and the opportunity to interact on a social and international level with students from Italy, Greece, France, Spain, Turkey, Egypt, Bulgaria and the UK.

Our speakers and diplomats excelled due to their confidence in expressing and justifying their points of view which they had previously prepared with the guidance of Mr. Horta. Their excellent performance was recognised by the event organisers who also awarded the Best Orator prize to Ana Rita, honouring her, CLIB and Portugal.
